King Charles was ‘crushed’ by Harry and Meghan’s announcement, which they withheld from him

The romance between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle began with a simple one-hour date in London.

It didn’t take long for the couple to start dating seriously, and they married in St. George’s Chapel in Windsor in 2018. Many people thought the pair were the future of the British Royal Family at the time. Of course, we all know how wrong those predictions were by now.

When Harry and Meghan first started dating in 2016, the press was keen to write articles about them. Buckingham Palace quickly realised that they needed to act in some way.

However, what the Palace undertook to publicise Harry and Meghan’s relationship had a negative impact on one person. Then-Prince Charles, according to two royal specialists,

Harry and Meghan’s relationship has been anything from tranquil and private. The duo has been in the spotlight when the paparazzi discovered their relationship.

Of course, the press plays a role, but Harry and Meghan have been forthright about their situation. They’ve shared their feelings with the world through interviews, podcasts, a Netflix documentary series, and Harry’s book, Spare.

The royals, by all accounts, are usually very well informed about what is going on within the family. This is due in part to the fact that they are family, but it is also vital for them to be able to aid each other and weather storms in the event of public issue or scandal.

This includes family members’ connections and dating partners, which are significant since they can alter the public’s overall perception of the Firm.

Some partnerships have previously been labelled as “bad” by senior Royal Family members. Nonetheless, these interactions have always been open and visible to all. However, according to reports, such was not the case with Harry and Meghan’s connection, at least in terms of King Charles.

Royal scholars Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand argue in their book Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of the Modern Royal Family that then-Prince Charles had no idea Harry was seeing Meghan. According to the writers, he learned of their relationship just 20 minutes before it became public.

The unexpected news about Harry’s new partner was claimed to have “crushed” King Charles and his servants at Clarence House. Interestingly, this was not because Harry was Charles’s son, but rather because Charles was concerned that it would overshadow his royal duties.

At the time, the Prince of Wales was about to go on a sensitive tour of the Middle East.

“It was a critical moment that had been in the works for months,” Scobie and Durand wrote in their book.

“A statement from Kensington Palace condemning the press while also confirming Harry’s new girlfriend would effectively end coverage of Prince Charles’ Gulf tour.”
